Stump Grinding in Gainesville, FL

That leftover stump doesn't have to stay. We grind stumps below grade — so you can resod, replant, or just mow in a straight line again.

Why Grind the Stump?

A tree removal isn't really finished until the stump is dealt with. Leftover stumps are mower-killers, trip hazards, and eyesores — and in Florida's climate, a decaying stump sitting in damp soil is an open invitation to termites, ants, and fungal problems you don't want near your house. Stumps from fast-growing species like laurel oaks can also send up suckers for years, turning one removed tree into a recurring chore.

Grinding solves all of it in one visit. A stump grinder chews the stump and major surface roots into chips, typically 6–12 inches below grade — deep enough that grass, sod, or a new planting goes right over the spot. Most residential stumps take 30–60 minutes. It's the fastest, least disruptive way to finish the job, and it's far cheaper than excavating the entire root ball (which for a mature oak can mean tearing up half your yard).

Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal

It's worth knowing the difference, because the terms get mixed up. Stump grinding shreds the stump in place below ground level and leaves the deeper roots to decay naturally underground — harmless, and actually good for the soil over time. Full stump removal (excavation) pulls the entire stump and root ball out of the ground with heavy equipment, leaving a crater that has to be backfilled.

For the vast majority of homeowners, grinding is the right call: faster, cheaper, and far less destructive to the surrounding yard. Full excavation only makes sense in specific cases — say, you're pouring a foundation or driveway exactly where the stump sits and need every root gone. If you're not sure which you need, ask us during the estimate. We'll give you a straight answer, not an upsell.

What to Expect on Grinding Day

First, we check access: the grinder needs a path roughly 3 feet wide to reach the stump, and we confirm there are no buried utilities in the grinding zone. If you don't know where your lines run, call 811 (Sunshine State One Call) before we arrive — it's free, and in Florida it's the law before digging. We'll remind you of this when you book.

On the day, we position the machine, grind the stump and visible surface roots to well below grade, and rake the resulting chips. You have two good options for the chips: we can haul them away for a clean finish, or leave them — stump chips make excellent mulch for beds (just don't pile them against your home's foundation). If you plan to resod or replant, we'll rake the area level and can add topsoil so the spot is ready. The whole thing is usually done in under an hour per stump, and bundled with a removal it's the most economical way to do it.

Pricing

Stump grinding is typically priced by the stump's diameter, with most single residential stumps falling in an affordable range — far less than the removal itself cost. Multiple stumps on the same visit almost always earn a volume discount, since the equipment is already there. And when grinding is bundled with a tree removal, it's the cheapest it'll ever be. As with everything we do, the estimate is free and the price is in writing before we start.

Stump Grinding Questions

How deep do you grind?

Typically 6–12 inches below grade — deep enough to resod, replant, or landscape right over the spot. If you need it deeper for a specific project (like a paver patio), tell us and we'll adjust.

Can I plant a new tree where the old stump was?

Usually yes, with one caveat: don't plant the same species in the exact same hole immediately, and give the chips time to settle or have them removed and replaced with topsoil. We'll advise you on the spot based on what was there.

What happens to the wood chips?

Your choice: we haul them away for a spotless finish, or leave them for you to use as mulch in landscape beds. Just keep mulch pulled back from the house foundation.

Do I need to do anything before you arrive?

Clear the area around the stump of decorations, toys, and anything fragile. Make sure we have a ~3-foot-wide path for the grinder. And call 811 a few days ahead so utilities are marked — it's free and required before digging in Florida.
